Ghana Cycling in 2024: A Year of Progress and Potential

 

2024 was a year of mixed successes for cycling in Ghana. Highlights included the 3FM Tour du Ghana, Ride Afrique Accra Criterium, Pru-Ride, and the 2024 National Cycling Championship showcasing the beauty of the country and attracting both local and international cyclists. However, challenges persist, including a lack of infrastructure, limited sponsorship, and the absence of high-performance training programs. To move forward, Ghana needs to invest in cycling infrastructure, attract more sponsors, establish training programs, and focus on grassroots development to nurture young talents.

• The 3FM Tour du Ghana was a multi-day stage race that showcased the beauty of Ghana's landscapes and attracted both local and international cyclists. The inclusion of para-cyclists was a significant step towards inclusivity in the sport.
• The RideAfrique Accra Criterium was a criterium race that attracted over 200 riders and featured both male and female categories. It served as a platform to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
• There has been a noticeable increase in the number of people taking up cycling for leisure and fitness, contributing to a growing cycling culture in Ghana.
• PruRide 2024 was a cycling event held in Ghana that attracted a significant number of participants.

 

 

The 2024 National Cycling Championship in Ghana was held on November 30, 2024, at the Vicolis Olebu in Ablekuma, Accra.

• Thrilling Competition: The event brought together top cyclists from 26 clubs across the nation, resulting in intense competition across various categories.
• Focus on Development: The championship aimed to identify and nurture young talent, while also providing a platform for experienced cyclists to showcase their skills.
• International Representation: The winners of the championship will have the opportunity to represent Ghana at international cycling events.

Categories:

• Elite: For experienced professional cyclists.
• Under-23: For cyclists aged 19-22.
• Junior: For cyclists aged 18 and under.

 

Events:

• Individual Time Trial: A race against the clock where each cyclist competes individually.
• Road Race: A multi-lap race covering a set distance.

The 2024 National Cycling Championship was a significant event for the development of cycling in Ghana, providing a platform for both aspiring and established cyclists to compete and showcase their talents.

• The lack of dedicated cycling lanes and safe cycling infrastructure remains a major challenge, hindering the development of competitive cycling and discouraging recreational cyclists.

DHL Border Crossing Cycling Tour 2024: A Historic Maiden Edition

The inaugural DHL Cross Border Cycling Tour 2024 concluded successfully, marking a ground-breaking event in the African cycling calendar. The tour brought together 58 cyclists from six countries—Ghana, Togo, Australia, the UK, the USA, and Senegal—including Africa's number one H-class para-cyclists from Senegal, showcasing inclusivity and sportsmanship at its finest.

Event Highlights

• Dates: 28th–29th December 2024
• Distance: 340km over two days
• Route:
  • Day 1: 170km ride from Accra to Lome
  • Day 2: 100km ride from Lome to Vume, followed by 70km transport from Vume to Accra

This initiative, spearheaded by Mr. Serigne Ndanck Mbaye, CEO of West Africa & Country DHL Global Forwarding in Ghana, has set a new benchmark for cross-border cycling in Africa. The event celebrated diversity, with participants from multiple continents uniting under the banner of recreation, culture, and endurance.

Looking Ahead
The second edition promises to elevate the experience further, with an expanded route spanning Accra, Lome, Cotonou, Lagos, and back to Accra. This ambitious plan will cover new terrains and attract even more international participants, fostering stronger regional and global connections.

Bicycle Logistical Challenges In Ghana: A Pathway to Sustainable Urban Mobility

Introduction

In recent years, the discussion around sustainable urban mobility has increasingly focused on cycling as a viable solution. Bicycles offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient mode of transport, especially in rapidly urbanizing regions like Ghana. However, despite these advantages, the integration of bicycles into Ghana's urban transportation system faces significant logistical challenges. This article delves into these challenges, highlighting infrastructural, cultural, policy, and safety-related issues that hinder the widespread adoption of cycling as a primary mode of transport in Ghana.

Infrastructural Challenges

One of the primary logistical challenges is the lack of dedicated infrastructure for cyclists. Ghana's cities, particularly Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale, have seen rapid urban growth, but this growth has not been matched by the development of adequate cycling infrastructure. Most roads are designed with motor vehicles in mind, leaving little to no space for cyclists. The absence of dedicated bicycle lanes forces cyclists to share the road with cars, motorcycles, and pedestrians, creating a hazardous environment for all.

Moreover, the few existing bicycle lanes are often poorly maintained, obstructed by parked vehicles, or abruptly end without proper signage, making cycling dangerous and impractical. The lack of infrastructure extends to secure bicycle parking facilities, which discourages potential cyclists who fear theft or damage to their bicycles.

Cultural and Social Barriers

Cultural perceptions of cycling in Ghana also pose significant challenges. Bicycles are often viewed as a mode of transport for the economically disadvantaged, rather than a viable option for the broader population. This perception is reinforced by the status associated with car ownership, which is often seen as a symbol of success and social mobility.

Additionally, there is a lack of awareness about the benefits of cycling, including health advantages, cost savings, and environmental impact. This is partly due to insufficient promotion of cycling by the government and civil society organizations. Without a cultural shift towards recognizing cycling as a legitimate and desirable mode of transport, efforts to integrate bicycles into urban logistics will likely face resistance.

Policy and Regulatory Framework

The policy environment in Ghana does little to support cycling. National transportation policies have traditionally prioritized road construction for motor vehicles, with little consideration for non-motorized transport. Although there are some initiatives aimed at promoting cycling, such as the Ghana Green City Initiative, these are often poorly implemented and lack the necessary resources for sustainability.

Furthermore, there is a lack of clear regulations and standards for cycling infrastructure, which leads to inconsistencies in the design and implementation of cycling projects. The absence of a coherent national cycling policy means that efforts to promote cycling are fragmented and lack coordination between different governmental and non-governmental entities.

Safety Concerns

Safety is a major concern for cyclists in Ghana. The country's roads are known for high levels of traffic accidents, with cyclists being particularly vulnerable. The lack of cycling infrastructure, coupled with aggressive driving behavior, increases the risk of accidents. Many drivers are not accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists and may not exercise the necessary caution, leading to dangerous encounters.

In addition to road safety, there is also the issue of personal security. Cyclists, particularly those commuting in urban areas, are at risk of theft and harassment, which further deters people from using bicycles for their daily commute.

Economic Factors

Economic factors also play a role in the logistical challenges faced by cyclists in Ghana. The cost of bicycles, particularly high-quality models suitable for urban commuting, can be prohibitive for many Ghanaians. While cheaper models are available, they often lack durability and require frequent maintenance, which can be a significant burden for low-income individuals.

Additionally, the importation of bicycles is subject to taxes and tariffs, which increase the cost for consumers. There is also a lack of local production, which limits the availability of affordable, high-quality bicycles tailored to the Ghanaian context.

Environmental and Health Benefits Overlooked

Despite the challenges, it is important to note the numerous benefits that cycling could bring to Ghana. Bicycles produce no emissions, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to motor vehicles. They also contribute to public health by providing a means of exercise, which can help combat the rising incidence of lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes. 

However, these benefits are often overlooked in policy discussions, where the focus remains on motorized transport. To fully realize the potential of cycling, there needs to be a greater emphasis on its environmental and health advantages, both in public discourse and in policy-making.

Conclusion

The logistical challenges facing cyclists in Ghana are significant but not insurmountable. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including the development of dedicated cycling infrastructure, a cultural shift towards recognizing the value of cycling, supportive policies and regulations, and initiatives to improve safety and security for cyclists.

Moreover, there is a need for greater investment in public awareness campaigns to highlight the benefits of cycling and to change perceptions about its role in urban mobility. With the right support, bicycles can become a key component of Ghana's transportation system, offering a sustainable and equitable solution to the challenges of urbanization.
