Pedalling Towards A Sustainable Future

Cycling in Ghana Magazine: Maiden Edition

Title: Pedalling Towards a Sustainable Future

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Cycling in Ghana Magazine, a platform dedicated to celebrating the evolving cycling culture in Ghana. In this edition, we explore the history, current trends, and future prospects of cycling in Ghana, focusing on its potential to drive sustainability, health, and economic growth.

1. A Brief History of Cycling in Ghana

Cycling was introduced in Ghana during the colonial era, primarily as a means of transportation. Over the decades, bicycles became an essential tool for mobility in rural areas, enabling access to education, healthcare, and markets. Notably, cycling gained competitive recognition with events such as the Tour du Ghana in the 1970s, which showcased local talents and fostered a love for the sport.

Today, cycling remains an integral part of life in Ghana, blending tradition and modernity as it grows as a sport, a means of eco-friendly transportation, and a tool for national development.

2. Cycling’s Role in National Development

Ghana’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) makes cycling a crucial part of the solution. From reducing carbon emissions to promoting healthy lifestyles and creating jobs, cycling presents untapped opportunities:

  • Health Benefits: Cycling reduces risks of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes.
  • Economic Empowerment: The rise of bicycle-sharing services and cycling tours create jobs and boost local businesses.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Cycling reduces dependence on fossil fuels, cutting down urban pollution.

Case Study:
The introduction of the Kumasi Bike-Share Initiative in 2022 reduced traffic congestion and supported eco-tourism efforts in the Ashanti Region.

3. Challenges in Ghana’s Cycling Landscape

Despite its potential, cycling in Ghana faces notable challenges:

  • Inadequate Infrastructure: The absence of dedicated bicycle lanes makes cycling unsafe in urban centres.
  • Low Awareness: Many Ghanaians still perceive cycling as a low-status activity rather than a viable transportation option.
  • Limited Funding: Professional cyclists lack sponsorship and resources for international competitions.

Quote:
“Cycling is not just a sport; it’s a way of life that deserves national attention.” – Mohammed Yahaya, President of the Ghana Cycling Federation.

4. Spotlight: Cycling Clubs in Ghana

Cycling clubs play a pivotal role in nurturing talent and promoting community engagement. Here are some key players:

  • Gladiators Cycling Club: Known for their weekend rides and charity rides
  • Eagle Riders Cycling Clubs: Community rides to encourage fitness for health and city-clean-up campaigns as well as pursuing cycling for change initiatives
  • Quick Step Cycling Club: Focusing on competitive training and youth development.
  • Cape Coast Pedal Pushers: Champions of cycling for women and children.
  • River Park Cycling Club, Greater Accra: Nurturing Talents and promoting community engagements.

The Ghana National Cycling Policy, currently under development, aims to:

Ghana Cycling in 2024: A Year of Progress and Potential

2024 was a year of mixed successes for cycling in Ghana. Highlights included the 3FM Tour du Ghana, Ride Afrique Accra Criterium, Pru-Ride, and the 2024 National Cycling Championship showcasing the beauty of the country and attracting both local and international cyclists. However, challenges persist, including a lack of infrastructure, limited sponsorship, and the absence of high-performance training programs. To move forward, Ghana needs to invest in cycling infrastructure, attract more sponsors, establish training programs, and focus on grassroots development to nurture young talents.

Key Highlights

  • The 3FM Tour du Ghana was a multi-day stage race that showcased the beauty of Ghana's landscapes and attracted both local and international cyclists. The inclusion of para-cyclists was a significant step towards inclusivity in the sport.
  • The RideAfrique Accra Criterium was a criterium race that attracted over 200 riders and featured both male and female categories. It served as a platform to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
  • There has been a noticeable increase in the number of people taking up cycling for leisure and fitness, contributing to a growing cycling culture in Ghana.
  • PruRide 2024 was a cycling event held in Ghana that attracted a significant number of participants.

The 2024 National Cycling Championship in Ghana was held on November 30, 2024, at the Vicolis Olebu in Ablekuma, Accra.

  • Thrilling Competition: The event brought together top cyclists from 26 clubs across the nation, resulting in intense competition across various categories.
  • Focus on Development: The championship aimed to identify and nurture young talent, while also providing a platform for experienced cyclists to showcase their skills.
  • International Representation: The winners of the championship will have the opportunity to represent Ghana at international cycling events.

Categories:

  • Elite: For experienced professional cyclists.
  • Under-23: For cyclists aged 19-22.
  • Junior: For cyclists aged 18 and under.

Events:

  • Individual Time Trial: A race against the clock where each cyclist competes individually.
  • Road Race: A multi-lap race covering a set distance.

The 2024 National Cycling Championship was a significant event for the development of cycling in Ghana, providing a platform for both aspiring and established cyclists to compete and showcase their talents.

Challenges

  • The lack of dedicated cycling lanes and safe cycling infrastructure remains a major challenge, hindering the development of competitive cycling and discouraging recreational cyclists.
  • While there are some sponsors supporting cycling events, more investment is needed to sustain the growth of the sport and provide adequate resources for athletes.
  • The absence of structured training programs and access to quality coaching limits the potential of Ghanaian cyclists to compete at the highest level

 Way Forward

  • Investing in the construction of cycling lanes and creating safe cycling routes is crucial to encourage more people to cycle and support the development of competitive cycling.
  • Attracting more sponsors to support cycling events and provide financial assistance to athletes is essential for the long-term growth of the sport.
  • Developing structured training programs and providing access to quality coaching will help Ghanaian cyclists reach their full potential.
  • Focusing on grassroots development initiatives, such as cycling clubs and schools programs, will help to nurture young talent and create a sustainable cycling future for Ghana.

Overall, 2024 has been a year of progress for cycling in Ghana, but there is still much work to be done to overcome the challenges and reach the sport's full potential. By addressing the infrastructure, sponsorship, and training needs, Ghana can create a thriving cycling culture and produce world-class cyclists.
